• Excellence is Achievable.
Here’s why I am the only qualified candidate to lead the Property Appraiser’s Office:
• Business Mindset –This race is unique in that 5 of the 6 candidates are career government employees seeking to triple their retirement pay in 4 years! Not only am I not a career government employee, I am the only business owner and bring extensive corporate experience to the office.
• Appropriate Training - Although candidates will try to convince you that this is a field appraiser’s job, an accounting position, a position requiring an attorney (may actually be true for one candidate!), or even a nursing job, in truth it is an Executive position requiring a broad set of skills in management, engineering and finance. I am the only candidate with graduate degrees in these areas, M.S. and MBA from Florida Tech.
• Experience – I am the only candidate with demonstrated leadership results in public service, assuming progressive levels of responsibility, the only candidate who lowered property taxes for 7 consecutive years while being recognized for organizational and academic excellence. I have practical experience earned on the Value Adjustment Board.
• People Skills – As Chairman of the Brevard Public Schools, we were named one of the 50 Best Employers of any kind in the United States and have earned that distinction for 3 consecutive years. Employee recruiting and retention are the best in the State. An advocate for the taxpayer, I write to my constituents every 2 weeks to keep them informed and I am the only candidate that encourages you to call me at home.
• Excellence is Achievable – Leadership awards include the 2007 Governor’s Sterling Award for organizational excellence; Government Finance Officers Award of Excellence in 2003 and annually to the present; Association of School Board Officials Award of Excellence, 2003 annually to present; and recipient of the Taino Award, presented by the United Third Bridge, Inc., in 2004.
I have demonstrated the skills needed to turn the Property Appraiser's Office around. I will restore public confidence, improve employee morale and ensure that your property appraisal reflects market values.
- Promote the highest professional and ethical standards including the American Society of Appraisers (ASA)
- Raise staff performance by competing among our peers, e.g., the International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO) – Certificate of Excellence in Assessment Administration Award
- Demand organizational transparency and accountability by implementing and enforcing the highest ethical standards in a highly visible organization
- Take a conservative approach of rebuilding the Office of Property Appraiser and provide a seamless transition necessary in a time of real estate market and revenue uncertainty
